Healing Power of the Ancient Elements

It is no surprise to me that my kundalini awakening experience happened during one of my ritual baths. According to Gaia, Kundalini energy is a divine feminine energy that awakens the awareness that exists in all of us. I have always been drawn to water and its healing and calming power over my body, mind, and soul. Over the last few years, I have intuitively begun incorporating different herbs, plants, flowers, Epsom salts, crystals, and essential oils into my baths — playing with other recipes and potions, depending on my mood. During one of these ritual baths, where I was chanting and meditating, I had this intense energetic release or what I later learned was a Kundalini awakening.

Kundalini is described as a serpent energy that is coiled up at the base of the spine, waiting to be unleashed. “When Kundalini awakens, a person may experience deeper empathy with others, and this empathy can almost become telepathic. There is greater sensitivity, higher energy levels, sometimes psychic abilities or deep knowing, ageing can appear to slow down, creativity and charisma can increase, as can internal peace and knowing. There is a sense of being part of All that Is. The greater mysteries of life are no longer mysteries.” - Kara-Leah Grant

Although my experience felt frightening and overwhelming at first, I eventually entered into a complete state of bliss, where I fully met and connected with my soul. The only way that I can describe it is that I felt connected to the entire planet, Mother Gaia, and could feel my soul smiling. After that experience, everything changed, and I've been on this journey of learning how to utilize and skillfully work with this new found energy.

The water element has always been a constant source of healing, magic, and connection for me. I am constantly being called to bodies of water, especially in nature, and feel entirely revitalized and powerful after being around one. My body feels recharged like a full battery — overflowing with life and exploding with sparks of creativity. Even the sound of waves and water flowing has a profound restoring effect on me. Water has played a considerable role in my healing journey and one that I continue to research.

Ancient healers throughout history have used and understood the power of the five elements found in nature (fire, earth, wood, metal, and water) to heal our mind, bodies, and spirits. For example, in Traditional Chinese Medicine, practitioners have developed a system known as the five elements of ancient medicine, to understand individual differences and provide treatment options based on your dominant element type. In his book, Ancient Remedies, Dr. Josh Axe reveals that we all have a deep connection with the earth and its elements and that the natural world's qualities exist within each of us. He claims that by understanding our dominant element or elements, we can learn how to help our bodies heal and thrive, physically and emotionally.

After taking the element quiz, it was no shock that my most dominate element was water. This element is associated with giving birth to creative ideas, needing to flow at my own pace, preferring solitude, and the ability to feel the whole wave of emotions. I also learned that the fluid-related organs, the kidneys, adrenals, and the bladder, are dominant. Health problems associated with the water element include urinary problems and diseases related to the sex organs, which I found remarkably accurate and intriguing. Using this ancient healing wisdom, I have started to incorporate the modalities that resonate most with me, including foods and herbs to support my dominant organs and exercises that mimic water movement— yoga, Qi Gong, swimming, and dancing. To find out your dominant element, order Dr. Josh Axe’s book or use this online quiz.

Regardless of which element you are drawn to or associate with, spending time in nature and immersing yourself in the elements is the most ancient, natural, and accessible healing method available. After trying numerous medical, alternative, conventional, and holistic treatments, I've never felt more alive, at peace, and whole than when I am fully connected to and bathing in the essence of nature.
